Top 10 Ways to Prevent Mould Growth in Your Home

Most people want to avoid mould in the house because it’s ugly. That’s a perfectly valid reason to take preventative steps, but more importantly some types of mould, like Stachybotrys or black mould, can be hazardous to human health.

While we can certainly assist with professional mould removal in your Toronto home, the best way to deal with this environmental hazard is making sure it doesn’t grow in the house in the first place.

Top 10 Mould Prevention Tips

Once you have arranged for mould testing and your home has received a clean bill of health, it’s time to implement our top 10 tips to keep mould at bay:

  1. Keep Things Dry. It only takes 24-48 hours for a mould colony to form. If there is a major leak or flood in your house, drying it up quickly will go a long way to keep a new colony from growing.
  2. Control Condensation. Boil a pot of water in a cold kitchen and watch what happens to the windows! That’s condensation, yet another source of moisture that can be a breeding ground for new growth. Always run the exhaust fan.
  3. Fix Leaks Promptly. It may be tempting to use a rolled up towel to “fix” a leaking dishwasher, but that allows moisture to accumulate. Always repair leaks as quickly as possible.
  4. Switch the Laundry. Everyone lets the laundry slide once in a while, but a washer full of wet clothes adds moisture to the home environment. Dry the laundry promptly, either in a well-ventilated dryer or outside on a line.
  5. Keep an Eye on Humidity. Mould thrives in humid conditions. Humidity flourishes in homes with poor ventilation. To improve ventilation, making things less cozy for mould, open the windows during the day, use the exhaust fan when showering, and use dehumidifiers.
  6. Let the Sun Shine In. Mould colonies are averse to bright lights. Whenever possible, open the curtains or blinds to let bright, natural light stream into the house. It will probably improve your mood too!
  7. Become a Clean Freak. Dampness and spills contribute to moisture problems in the home, but the presence of organic materials is the real problem. This provides the “food” mould colonies need to grow. Clean them quickly and thoroughly.
  8. Stay Cool. Mould growth is most active in temperatures above 21C. If you can keep indoor temperatures below that with climate controls, give it serious consideration.
  9. Upgrade to a HEPA Vacuum. If you’re ready to upgrade your vacuum cleaner, consider one equipped with a HEPA filter. A more expensive vacuum can help pay itself off keeping your home mould free.
  10. Don’t Get Complacent! If you do find anything that looks like it might be mould in your house, don’t wait to investigate. Arrange for mould testing right away and then decide what to do about mould removal.
