How to safely spruce up your home this spring

As summer approaches, spring is the perfect time to spruce up the interior and exterior of your home. But why not kill two birds with one stone and do a safety check up too?

A fresh coat of paint can work wonders in changing the look and feel of your home. But exterior paint and interior paint can be equally dangerous as lead concentrations can be found in both.

For exterior paint, lead concentration is known to be higher and more prominent than in interior paint. The danger there is that it can get into your soil, and lead does not biodegrade or disappear. This means exposure for the young children who play outside or for the green thumb in your home who spends time in the garden.

If your home was built before 1978, a DIY exterior paint job can be tough, but worthwhile in adding a coat of safety. But your safest bet might be to hire a pro and keep the DIY for the inside job.

Look for companies who have been certified by different environmental companies, ask to see certification from potential painters and ensure lead-safe practices are being observed.
