Discovering that there is a toxic substance like mould, lead paint, or asbestos lurking in your home or office is unsettling to say the least. You might have questions running through your mind about your level of exposure to these harmful substances and the effect it may be having on your health. Feeling overwhelmed is completely understandable.

First, relax. Many of your fellow Toronto and Southern Ontario residents have been in your shoes. You have identified the problem, which means you have taken the first step to solve it. Second, recognize that putting yourself in the hands of experienced, committed experts is the best thing you can do to enable a swift resolution.

The most important step to recover from the shock of discovering a contaminant in your home or office is preventing it from getting any worse. This is where the services of a disaster recovery specialist skilled in containment prove invaluable. Decon Environmental Remediation knows how to properly protect your home from further damage while we work with you to make your space safe.

How does environmental containment work?

For the best results when decontaminating a space, one first needs to determine the extent of the contamination, find out if the whole property needs treatment or if it can be restricted to specific areas, and then seal off any areas that do not need to be treated.

Once the needs of the project have been identified, the property can be divided into smaller, more manageable work areas. Isolating each space can separate areas with a high level of contamination from those that are less affected, thus lowering the risk of cross-contamination. Each work area can then be completely sealed off once it passes a screening test.

Specifics of the containment methods used vary by the requirements of the space, but generally the process works like this:

  • Hard materials are used to build a frame for thick plastic sheeting (4-6mm).
  • Access points are equipped with flaps or zippers to prevent contaminated materials from leaving the containment area.
  • An air-tight seal is further protected by negative air pressure and a HEPA filter.
  • Contaminated areas are cleaned using an appropriate method (i.e., wet sanding for lead paint, wet wiping and thorough drying for mould, HEPA vacuuming for asbestos, etc.) and a clearance test is done within the containment area.
  • If pre-testing was done, air sample results should show substantially lower levels of the contaminant after remediation.

A professional environmental remediation company can best determine what kind of containment is needed, whether it’s surface containment to address just the affected area; local containment to address the affected area and the space immediately surrounding it; or full containment to address the entire building.
