How Quickly Does Mould Grow?

When you first notice a mould problem in your house, a natural reaction is to get rid of as fast as you possibly can. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to Toronto homeowners taking things into their own hands by trying to take on mould removal in their homes. The problem is that these well-intentioned efforts often involve cleaning techniques that can make mould problems worse instead of better. Putting on some gloves and using a bucket of soapy water to attack this unsightly mess can release harmful toxins (mould spores) into the air in your home, where they are arguably more dangerous than if they had just been left alone.

It may be hard to think about that ugly mould in your basement or bathroom as a living thing, but that’s exactly what it is. Like all living things, mould is programmed on a biological level to adapt to changing conditions to survive. That means you can’t expect it to go down without a fight.

Mould: It Grows Faster than You Think!

One of the trickiest things about mould is that it likes a lot of the same conditions and temperatures that humans also enjoy. If you have ever found something that fell way into the back of the fridge, (and who hasn’t?), then you know that mould can grow and thrive even in some pretty cold conditions. Under perfect conditions, where the area is warm, damp and there is poor air flow, a mould colony can grow up to 6cm2 each day. With this fast rate of growth, you can easily see how a small patch of mould can become a serious problem in a matter of days or weeks. If your mould is living in an area that is not visible to the naked eye, you could be suffering from the harmful effects of a mould infestation long before you discover the source.

Do NOT Try This at Home

There is a lot of debate as to whether or not it’s safe to try to remove a mould infestation on your own at all. If the area is small and you have proper safety gear like gloves, a mask and eye protection on hand, then you can try to remove it yourself. Just be sure not to make the problem worse by leaving the area wet after you finish cleaning. Any surviving spores will quickly re-grow and the added moisture will allow them to bring a few of their mouldy friends to the party too!

Know When to Call a Professional

When you have done all you can to avoid the conditions that can make a mould problem in your home worse, and you still have a problem with recurring mould, it’s time to call in a professional. If you need mould testing in Toronto, it doesn’t have to be a complicated affair. Once the type of mould has been identified and the source of the contamination has been located, it can be properly addressed. Working with a professional mould remediation company from the start can often save you a lot of time and frustration, not to mention ridding your home of this potentially harmful material more quickly than you could ever do it on your own.
